Student origins and destinations
Visualisation of the recorded origin of students prior to arrival at College and the first destination of students upon leaving/graduating
A note on Methodology
The Student Origins and Destinations have been recorded systematically from available primary sources.
The 'Origin' refers their known place of residence before arriving at LDTC.
The 'Destination' refers to their first known destination after leaving College: in almost all cases, this was the location of their first teaching post.
Google Gemini was used to translate locations (town and county) into mapping co-ordinates. The data tables were then imported to a custom Google Map (My Maps).
Each pin on the maps represents an individual student of LDTC.
Clicking on the relevant 'pin' on the map reveals the underlying data compiled for each student. Expand this sentence to get an overview of the categories of information presented and their archival and methodological origin:
Surname, forename(s) - information taken from LDTC Student Record Cards, LDTC Student Magazines and Birth Records (if needed)
Year left LDTC - information taken from LDTC Student Record Cards and LDTC Student Magazines
Birth place - information taken from the General Register Office (GRO), or ‘Scotland’s People’ if in Scotland. If a student is listed as 'Overseas' then this information has come from census/overseas birth records on Ancestry.com (and passengers lists) that listed place of birth.
Parental occupation - information taken from LDTC Student Record Cards in the early decades but this ceased to be recorded at end of the 1870s. Further research used national Census - if parents deceased then previous census (before the student was born) was used. If mothers were widows, consulted most relevant census to identify deceased father's trade. Mother identified as widow if father’s trade not identified. If parental occupation was not identified by any of these methods then those of other close family occupations were identified, e.g. sibling, uncle, aunt or stepfather.
Pupil Teaching Location - information taken from LDTC Student Record Cards where recorded. If not, then further research in LDTC Student Magazines was undertaken.
Origin Town & County (place of residence before arriving at LDTC) - Where this information was recorded in LDTC Student Record Cards it was captured. For the most part, we avoided using terminology of the metropolitan counties created via the 1972 Local Government Act, with the exception of the West Midlands, e.g. Grimsby is listed in Lincolnshire, not North Lincolnshire, Salford is listed as Lancashire, not Greater Manchester, etc. Used ‘London’ to describe ‘county’ for places incorporated into Greater London in 1963 London Government Act Local Government Act. Some student have no Record Card. Some Record Cards do not mention an origin town/county. In these cases the Census records closest to when the student entered the College were found and that place entered as town & county of origin, e.g. if they started College in 1899, the 1891 residence on the Census was used.
Despite this, some individual origins could not be identified during research process.
Destination (first known destination after leaving LDTC: this was, in almost all cases, the location of their first teaching post) – Where this information was recorded in LDTC Student Record Cards it was captured. Where is was not recorded then LDTC Student Magazines were consulted. If this was insufficient then Censuses could be used if the year was within a couple of years of the student leaving as they were supposed to stay in their first post for at least two government inspections before they were awarded their full certificate or parchment. If the students were identified in the Census living at home post-college then it was assumed they were working in the locality if they were identified as teachers or schoolmistresses.
