In Editors Notes it mentions Jean trying to persuade family to allow her to be a VAD.

In 1916 – 

There is evidence to show that ‘Jean’ is a VAD Nurse. She enrolled in May 1916 and is at Glinger Bank, Longtown.

She is at 16 Hart Street, Carlisle. Her father is listed as ‘Registrar of Births and Deaths retired’. Her mother is unlisted. Her brother, Barwise, is listed as ‘Joiner’. Jane is listed as ‘School Teacher’. Her sister, Nora, is listed as ‘Clerk Scottish Dyers’. Her brother, Richard, is listed as ‘Insurance Clerk’. 

In 1939 – 

She is at 58 Brampton Road, Carlisle. Jane is listed as ‘School Mistress Elementary’.
